The main objectives of the 2nd Coordination and Support Action (CSA) of the Joint Programming Initiative Healthy Diet for a Healthy Life (JPI HDHL) are to support the further implementation of JPI HDHL and to create a sustainable collaboration of Member States (MS), the European Commission (EC) and related international organisations. Support facilitated by the 2nd CSA will ensure sufficient progress on alignment and also on the ethos of joint programming in the area of nutrition and health becoming embedded within Member States’ research and innovation policies and programmes. The 2nd CSA will focus specifically on these issues and will take into account foresight and evaluation activities as important aspects for the future of research in the scientific and policy areas covered within the JPI HDHL. Objectives of the 2nd CSA: 1. Alignment of national research programs on health and nutrition 2. Mature collaboration between the MS and focus on a sustainable support structure for the JPI. 3. Increase collaboration with important stakeholders. Industry, science and policy will be invited to take ownership of areas of the JPI which are under their responsibility. 4. Communication activities of the JPI will increase to make the JPI an even more important player in the area of Nutrition & Health. 5. Show the impact of joint programming on Nutrition & Health within the MS. The evaluation of the JPI will go beyond pure process indicators and will focus on effect and impact evaluation. 6. The collaboration within the JPI will move beyond Europe. In the first phase Canada and New Zealand have become partners, but the next five years will be used to broaden the scope of the JPI to new interested countries with a specific focus on Asia and the America’s.

The overall objective of CASA is a consolidated common agricultural and wider bioeconomy research agenda within the European Research Area. The common research agenda will be jointly shared by Member States of the European Union and Associated Countries. It will improve the alignment and interoperability of the respective national research programme(s). This will be achieved through enhanced cooperation, coordination and information exchange between the Member States, Associated Countries and the European Commission. This includes increasing the opportunities for Member States and Associated Countries to engage in the aforementioned activities. The conduit for this will be the Standing Committee of Agricultural Research (SCAR) and the various SCAR working groups, through which all Member States and Associated Countries are brought together with a view to fostering cooperation, coordination and information exchange, as well as streamlining research policy, in the bioeconomy and closely related fields. The overarching aim of CASA will be achieved through the accomplishment of the following four specific objectives: 1. Increased and broadened participation, interaction and collaboration of Member States and Associated Countries 2. Improved quality of outputs and outcomes of the Standing Committee of Agricultural Research creating added value for greater impact 3. Strengthening the production of more strategic policy advice by the Standing Committee of Agricultural Research based on the increased, deepened and broadened participation facilitated by CASA 4. Improve overall organisation, communication and dissemination of SCAR activities, outputs and outcomes for greater impact

The Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change (FACCE-JPI), launched in October 2010 by the European Council, brings together 21 countries committed to “building an integrated European Research Area addressing the challenges of agriculture, food security and climate change” (FACCE-JPI Strategic Research Agenda). The JPI aims at aligning research programming among its members in the long run, so as to increase the efficiency of research funding, cover gaps, avoid duplications and provide high-level innovative research on the European scene. The FACCE-Evolve Coordination and Support Action is designed to solidify foundations that will ensure long-term durability of joint programming and actions. FACCE-Evolve will thus continue to support the successful development of the FACCE-JPI and allow it to develop a set of means destined to ensure its self-sustainability. The FACCE-Evolve will therefore provide support to JPI members in order to: • Investigate different options for self-sustainability and test the most suitable ones. • Investigate and develop novel processes and tools to support uptake of the SRA and its updates as well as the bi-annual implementation plans and monitor effective harmonisation, integration and alignment of national research programming, to enable evidence-based policy making and effective cross-policy actions • Implement and oversee the increasing number of joint actions • Pursue ongoing coordination with Horizon 2020 objectives with a scale and scope of action that should go well beyond what either the EU or Member States can achieve on their own • Ensure the perpetuation of an effective, enriching dialogue with European and international stakeholders • Strengthen the international dimension and visibility of the JPI through a strong communication and dissemination strategy and links with other initiatives.

Soil health is vital for the delivery of food, energy, and biomaterials, as well as climate action, ecosystem services and biodiversity. Pressure on land and soil is growing due to competing demands for land and biobased products. A sustainable soil management that satisfies the increasing demand and avoids soil degradation requires coordinated R&I. This project will employ a multi-actor approach to create an effective framework for action in the wider area of soil health and land management by coordinating efforts and pooling resources, by developing a coherent portfolio of R&I activities and by identifying criteria for Living Labs and lighthouses to demonstrate solutions. The CSA will bring together the main players in soil health and management in a transdisciplinary approach. Planned activities include the analysis of the needs for R&I on soil and land management as expressed through stakeholder/citizen consultation and ongoing research projects, the identification of gaps, priority areas and types of action for intervention including Living Labs and lighthouses. The action fields sprawl from agriculture and forestry to spatial planning, land remediation, climate action, and disaster control. Outcomes and results will be - A stakeholder-based, co-created roadmap for R&I to support the Horizon Europe Mission in the area of Soil Health and Food. - Improved coordination with existing activities in Europe and globally, thereby raising visibility and effectiveness of R&I funding. - Identification of and learning from existing and potential Living Labs and lighthouses for testing and demonstrating solutions in order to simultaneously satisfy competing demands of soil use. With its activities, the CSA will support the EC and the Mission Board of the Horizon Europe Mission in the area of Soil Health and Food in delivering the objectives.
