The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the key global climate science-policy interface, underpinning international climate change policy-making and is the leading global body responsible for the scientific assessment of climate change. In preparation of the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report (AR6), support will be provided to increase the participation of experts from developing countries and economies in transition, should their governments not be in a position to provide appropriate funding, to the IPCC process. Support will also be provided to enhance the visibility of the IPCC products globally.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) is the key global climate science-policy interface, underpinning European and international climate change policy-making and is the leading global body responsible for the scientific assessment of climate change. In preparation of the next Assessment Report, support will be provided to increase the participation of experts from developing countries and EU countries, should their governments be unable to provide appropriate funding, consistent with IPCC practices, to the IPCC process and enhance visibility of the IPCC goals in Europe.

The iClimateAction project addresses the need of increased coordination and synergies among the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), to improve the international alignment across organisations regarding creation, management and utilization of climate data. All three organizations have key coordination functions along the value chain of climate data, including production, curation and exploitation, and that support evidence-based decision-making to manage risks and adapt to a changing climate. The iClimateAction will support GCOS, GEO, WMO in their common endeavor to strengthen the global system for standardized, open, accessible, usable, and interoperable global observation systems for Essential Climate Variables (ECVs), and aiming at a shared and coordinated strategy towards the development of a more coherent, sustainable, and comprehensive global observing system for climate. The iClimateAction strategy serves the implementation of EU actions supporting EO programs, including the Copernicus Services, ESA-Climate Change Initiative, EUMETSAT Satellite Application Facilities, and aiming at enhanced climate data uptake to fulfill the European Green Deal. Guided by its overarching objective to advance the current observing system and its ability to monitor and predict the evolution of the Earth’s climate, the project will develop its action plan around 4 specific objectives, implemented through 7 work packages and 2 useful demonstrators, allowing to cluster existing activities around urban and ecosystems resilience, serving as benchmarks for the coordination, and providing focus on two climate change adaptation and mitigation areas of relevance for science and policy making goals. The iClimateAction project will foster EO data exploitation, and deliver a set of recommendations for a sustainable inter-organization coordination to maximize the value and impact of the EO data chain.
