The goal of our project is to empower a broad range of research fields with a completely new particle detector, able to concurrently deliver time resolutions of the order of ~10 picoseconds and position resolutions of ~30 microns. In so doing, we will remove the constrains that many applications such as particle tracking, medical PET, mass spectroscopy, and beam monitoring have due to the lack of precise information on all 4 dimensions. Our analysis of state-of-the-art particle detectors has shown a dichotomy: specialized sensors measure very accurately either time or position, but not both: the ambitious goal of UFSD is to create a new family of detectors, based on controlled charge multiplication in silicon, which will remove this limitation. We will have to tackle significant challenges along this research path, but our simulations and prototypes indicate that this approach has the potentiality to radically transform present detectors and to enable many applications to reach their peak performances. Our ultimate goal -- a highly segmented detector with a space resolution of ~30 microns and a time resolution of ~10 picoseconds -- can be achieved only by developing full custom Very Large Scale Integrated chips that, matching the size of the read-out to the area of each pixel sensor, will deliver unprecedented timing resolution at the pixel level. The PI, N. Cartiglia, is well known in the field of particle physics and detector development. He is currently in charge of several projects involving both new directions in physics, among which the LPCC forward physics group and the CT-PPS project at CERN, as well as new developments in instrumentation. He will lead the project leveraging on his past experience in detector development and group/grant management, his knowledge of the silicon research foundries and laboratories, and the expertise available in his home institution (INFN, Torino, Italy).

The project aims at developing both an advancement on the extant research on the role of Human Capital (HC) within two major actors of the entrepreneurial finance ecosystem, Business Angels (BAs) and Crowdinvestors (CIs) and an original set of competencies generated by a partnership of academic and non-academic institutions. Direct objective of the project is building a competence network able to improve employability and career prospects both in and outside academia in the entrepreneurship and finance sector, thanks to a fully international, interdisciplinary and intersectoral mobility of EU researchers. A total of 91 out-going secondments and 91 in-coming secondments of researchers will be committed from the partners involved in three Countries. The objective of the project is to design, develop and maintain a EU dataset on different dimensions of BAs’ and CIs’ innovative HC characteristics and their impact on startup survival and success performances. Research on the relationship between investors' HC and the growth and performance of startups within the entrepreneurial finance ecosystem is still at a seminal level, considering the the impact of digitization, the study of competences related to green and sustainability investing, and female entrepreneurship. The project will help advancing these research streams, going beyond traditional HC features and assessing their impact on startup survival, subsequent financing channels and a comprehensive set of financial and non-financial performance indicators, through its training and dissemination activities. The project is expected to generate a large scientific, economic, and societal impact. The results will offer useful suggestions to market operators and policy-makers for emphasizing the contribution of BAs and CIs towards digitization and green transition in the finance sector.

The European Master of Science in Skin Health and Care (EMOTION) educates the future generation of translational scientists and professionals in skin health and care and equips them with the knowledge and skills to work in research and development and contribute to the conception and development of innovative cosmetics, dermatological drugs and medical devices. While the Master is focused on R&D, it covers the entire spectrum of activities, from ideation to marketing, from setting up a company to post-marketing surveillance. Well-being, diversity, inclusion, cooperation, jointness, communication, entrepreneurship and excellence are key words of the program. EMOTION is a 2-year 120 ECTS program that issues a double degree, from the Università del Piemonte Orientale (Novara, IT) and from either the Universitad Miguel Hernández (Elche, ES) or the Université de Namur (Namur, BE). Every year, 30 places are available (18 with scholarships, 7 non-fee paying and 5 fee-paying self-funded). The first year of the Master is spent in Italy studying early-stage discovery. In the second year, students opt to go to Spain to study non-clinical research and development or to go to Belgium to study clinical development. In the last semester, the student undertakes an internship, which may be in industry or in academia anywhere in the world. The consortium, alongside a roster of knowledgeable academics, also involves a number of industrial associated partners and many lectures are held by guest lecturers that work in the field. Three dedicated workshops are organized in each intake, and visits to companies and fairs are also included. The programme will result in a consolidated and international network of academic and non-educational actors cooperating to develop innovative pharmaceutical-grade, cosmetic-grade and device-grade products for skin well-being and will culminate in the organization of an international conference in the field of dermatology.
