Additive manufacturing (AM) has been highlighted as a key technology with potential for creating sustainable high value European based employment, addressing societal issues and supporting environmental sustainability. The processes based on Additive Manufacturing spans many industries, including automotive, medical, aeronautics, defense, capital and consumer goods and do-it-yourself concept, energy, etc. AM has demonstrated to possess the capability to generate future revenues, to develop novel disruptive business models, not seen up to date, that could help to keep manufacturing in Europe competing with emergent countries. All those are heavyweight reasons for Europe to make specific efforts to define a plan of action in the field. This strategy should include detail implementation plan defining innovation sectorial chains from design phase to target commercial products. It should define TRL aspect in each link of the chains, type of stakeholders to carry out the tasks, timeline and priorities. Moreover, in order to have a complete success should also involve not only technology stakeholders but also policy makers. On this basis, FoFAM project takes up the challenge of clustering technology developments on AM and place them into defined value chains in lead markets for Europe. The project intends to identify gaps for business development and to attack them with specific actions and timeline. It also includes high involvement of European regions to ensure an efficient use of structural funds associated to them. FoFAM also address not only technological aspects but also aims at identifying other horizontal economical and societal issues that will be taken into consideration to ensure AM industrial deployment. To involve high number of key stakeholders , the project has achieved the support of project coordinators of FoF projects, European Technology Platforms, EFFRA, European Business and Innovation and European Regions Research and Innovation Networks.

While most SwafS initiatives have contributed to strengthening knowledge and approaches to Open Science, few initiatives have explored and implemented an RRI approach to Open Innovation. MOSAIC will address this SwafS knowledge base gap, exploring how to translate the involvement of stakeholders “from all parts of the quadruple helix”, typical of SwafS and RRI, in Open Innovation ecosystems, within the context of a mission-like environment focused on climate neutral and smart cities priorities. Drawing upon the richness of SwafS experiences so far, MOSAIC’s research will lead to the assessment of effective instruments applicable to successful co-creation approaches in quadruple-helix Open Innovation pathways. While doing so, the MOSAIC consortium will define and assess indicators to measure impacts and transformative changes that are specific to this particular context, generating scientific publications as well as toolkits to be further used within future SwafS-like initiatives and beyond. Pilot actions in the cities of Brussels and Milan will test MOSAIC’s methodological approach and research actions throughout the project. The piloting process will produce concrete instruments and recommendations, to be replicated in further European cities and regions willing to engage in mission-oriented approaches via quadruple helix collaboration, but also to enrich the work of Horizon Europe researchers and stakeholders more broadly.

Fostering a Transition towards Responsible Research and Innovation Systems The main objective of FoTRRIS is to develop and introduce new governance practices to foster Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) policies and methods in research and innovation systems. Since research and innovation systems and practices in different European MS and within different research performing organisations vary, FoTRRIS will consider the implementation of new governance practices in five different MS In order to stress that responsible research and innovation is a collaborative activity from the very beginning—collaboration starts ‘upstream’, from the definition of the problem or challenge, continues with the analysis of the problem, the projection of potential solutions, the design of a research and innovation project that aims at realising a solution, and goes on during its performance and monitoring—FoTRRIS adds the prefix ‘co’ to the acronym RRI. Moreover, because important present-day challenges are (at least partially) of a global nature, but manifest themselves in ways that are influenced by local conditions, FoTRRIS focusses on ‘glocal’ challenges, i.e. local/regional manifestations of global challenges and on ‘local’ opportunities for solving them. FoTRRIS will perform a transition experiment, i.e. an experiment to support the transformation of present-day research and innovation strategies into co-RRI-strategies. It will design, test and validate the organisation, operation and funding of a co-RRI-hub. This hub is conceived as a small organisational unit, that will function as a local one-stop innovation platform that encourages various knowledge actors from science, policy, industry and civil society to co-design, -perform, and –monitor co-RRI-projects that are attuned to local manifestations of global sustainability challenges. The transition experiments performed in 5 member states will be evaluated and policy recommendations to implement co-RRI derived.

Pilots4U aims to setup one very visible, easy accessible network of open access pilot and multipurpose demo-infrastructures for the European bio-economy with Europe-wide coverage and protecting IP rights of users. Since pilot- and demo equipment is very expensive and requires specific expertise, open access infrastructures are the most cost-effective manner to support the deployment of industry-driven innovations in the market. To assure that the network meets the needs of the European bio-economy industry (SMEs, start-ups, Large enterprises), current European pilot and demo-capabilities are compared with the needs of the European biobased industry. Up to six business cases of investments in additional equipment, facilities or capabilities will be evaluated, and the first steps will be taken to attract financing. Different cooperation schemes for the open access pilot- and demo-network will be considered. The project consortium has all the required players to succeed: Six partners are coordinating bio-economy pilot or multipurpose demo-infrastructure networks, and therefore assure the involvement of over 40 infrastructures: Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant (SmartPilots), VTT (ERIFORE), Royal Institute of Technology KTH (BRISK), Swansea University (Enalgae), Ghent University (Biorefine Cluster Europe) and NNFCC (as secretary of the BioPilotsUK initiative). The cluster organisation CLIC Innovation is representing industry that is contributing in cash to the project. The Europan Regions, research and innovation network with 150 member regions will attract interested European stakeholders (infraststructure owners and users) to get involved in the project, and NNFCC, the bio-economy consultant, is a professional, independent consultant who will lead the study.

NEB Junction collects, packages and validates stakeholder knowledge into Knowledge Gems, and makes them publicly available in an AI-supported, attractive and accessible IT Portal. We cooperate with a broad set of NEB stakeholders - and stakeholders that might not yet be interested or are traditionally excluded - using multi-stakeholder sessions, learning journeys and stakeholder assemblies. Our Monitoring System bridges cultural and creative perspectives with environmental, economic, social, health and governance aspects, making sustainable solutions more relatable and attractive to policy makers, public authorities, construction ecosystems and local communities. We connect stakeholders with the NEB Facility through NEB Coffees, mapping of R&I gaps, foresight activities and more, to distill NEB at your Fingertips - Pathways to NEB Implementation, and a Roadmap for the NEB Facility. We work with creative and cultural sectors and industries to generate a sense of belonging to NEB, combining AI-supported analysis with human reflections on NEB values, needs and expectations in a co-design approach. All of this work is supported by a Vision co-created with the stakeholders, enabling its long life-time also after the end of the project. The NEB Junction is created and managed by 8 experienced NEB partners: AIT, Ars Electronica, Climate KIC, DemSoc, DOWEL, ERRIN, ICLEI, and NTNU as Project Coordinator.
