METICOS aims to introduce Big Data Analysis of border control information systems, in order to provide a step-change towards more modern and efficient Smart Border management and towards gaining societal and political acceptance of modern control technologies of EU borders such as “no gate solutions”. It is therefore positioned as an initiative to create a real-time decision-support system with regard to different Smart Border control technologies that empowers two major stakeholder groups within the European border control sector (i.e., travellers and border control authorities & service providers) to ensure user acceptance, secure positive societal impact and maximize border control process efficiency. To this end, the METICOS project will develop a platform that integrates information systems and networks of data sources in order to validate the efficiency and users acceptance of border control technologies. The proposed platform will provide metrics and KPIs to authorities and decision makers, based on a number of independent variables: performance expectancy, effort expectancy, facilitating conditions, physical privacy, accuracy, information privacy, ethical and societal perceptions. To maximize impact of the project, METICOS will join the European Initiative for Smart Borders and contribute aforementioned cross-border and cross-cultural Big Data Analysis and decision support systems that feature harvesting of multi-lingual and cross-sectorial data from heterogeneous sources, different analytics approaches and risk assessment methods. METICOS will be demonstrated and validated under real operating conditions. This will involve two pilot implementations executed at five different countries involving real travellers and staff. Furthermore, the METICOS ecosystem aims to work closely with border control research initiatives to demonstrate its operational performance improvements by means of combined validation with these solutions.

Mobility in the urban and maritime domains hugely impacts the global economy, generating data at high rates from an increasing number of moving objects. Management of the complete lifecycle of such data implies that trustworthy and privacy-preserving infrastructures need to be put in place, so that reliable and secure data operations can be provided. Meanwhile, the mobility data exploitation has still a wide potential due to the emerging applications and the environmental footprint caused by mobility (e.g., carbon emissions, energy consumption). Motivated by these pressing needs, MobiSpaces delivers an end-to-end mobility-aware and mobility-optimized data governance platform with key differentiating factor that the outcomes of mobility analytics will be utilized to optimize the complete data path, in terms of efficient, reliable, secure, fair and trustworthy data processing. MobiSpaces promises the extraction of actionable insights from ubiquitous mobile sensor data and IoT devices in a decentralized way, offering intelligent transportation services, enforcing privacy constraints at the expected point of action. XAI techniques will be applied at the level of data management and machine learning, supporting the creation of comprehensive and interpretable prediction models, while all the research outcomes will be validated through five use cases: 1) intelligent public transportation services in urban environments, 2) intelligent infrastructure traffic sensing for smart cities, 3) vessel tracking for non-cooperative vessels, 4) decentralized processing on-board of vessels, and 5) enhanced nautical maps via crowdsourced bathymetry vessels data. These actions will be continuously adapted and monitored for their environmental sustainability, whereas MobiSpaces will create a widely accepted standard of data processing and analytics, alongside a data-rich ecosystem providing trustworthy and actionable data that is vital for enabling the growth of the EU digital economy.

ATLANTIS aims at enhancing resilience and Cyber-Physical-Human (CPH) security of the key EU Critical Infrastructures, going beyond the scope of distinct assets, systems, and single CI, by addressing resilience at the systemic level against major natural hazards and complex attacks that could potentially disrupt vital functions of the society. The mission of ATLANTIS, which involves 39 European partners with complementary roles and skills, is to improve the resilience and the protection capabilities of interconnected ECI exposed to evolving systemic risks due to existing and emerging large-scale, combined, cyber-physical threats and hazards, guarantee the continuity of operations, while minimizing cascading effects in the infrastructure itself, the environment, other CIs, and the involved population, enabling public and private actors to meet current and emerging challenges by adopting sustainable security solutions. The mission of ATLANTIS will be achieved by - Improving knowledge on large-scale, vulnerability assessment and long-term systemic risks. - Improving the systemic resilience of ECI, through novel, adaptive, flexible, and customizable security measures (“by design”) and tools (“by innovation”). - Improving effective cooperation among CI operators and government security stakeholders, while preserving CI autonomy and sovereignty. - Delivering an open TRL-7 technological framework that will provide the ECIs with AI -based solutions for increased AWARENESS, CAPABILITY and COOPERATION in managing systemic threats. The ATLANTIS solution will be validated and demonstrated in 3 large-scale cross-border and cross-sector pilots: - LSP#1: Cross-Border/Cross Domain Large Scale Pilot in Transport, Energy and Telecoms (Slovenia, Croatia, Italy and France); - LSP#2: Cross Domain Large Scale Pilot in Health, Logistics/Supply Chain and Border control (Cyprus, Greece and Croatia); - LSP#3: Cross-Country Large-Scale Pilot in FinTech/Financial (Spain, Germany, Cyprus).
