The Research Unit “Glass and Ceramics for the Arts” seeks a multidisciplinary approach in glass science, developing expertise in the synthesis of new glass based materials always exploring the aesthetics of colour and light. Our research unit puts great emphasis in the interface art/science. This group also aims to contribute to the knowledge and preservation of glass and ceramic heritage, in order to reveal its historical and artistic value and improve conservation strategies. Furthermore the research group is giving a contribution to university education supervising Master and PhD students on glass and ceramics related subjects, and being the host of an innovative master program, the Master in Glass Art and Science. The Research Unit “Glass and Ceramics for the Arts” has three main research lines: Glass science in art The luminescence properties of some rare earth oxides and their application in contemporary art were the first objective and continue to be explored, with the extension to luminescent enamels for painting. Emphasis will also be placed on the development of luminescent borosilicate glasses. For the borosilicate glasses the red colour using either gold or copper will also be explored using a new process very recently developed by this research group. Other objectives include the introduction of colour effects by thin layer deposition of metal oxides. The final aim of this research is the application of those materials and techniques in artworks using glassblowing techniques, kiln casting, pâte de verre and the development of artistic imagery using CO2 laser engraving in combination with fired glass enamels. Luminescent glazes and its applications in artistic ceramic are under study, in particular on the many chromatic possibilities for this type of glazes, with different rare-earth elements. We are also interested in the development of macro-crystalline glazes fired at 1200 ºC doped with rare-earth elements. Another research line is the use of glazes with basalt as the main component and their application in artworks. Besides the interaction of artists with scientists to understand the materials they use, discovering sometimes quite new materials, change their colours, mix effects, discuss the effects obtained, etc.. some artists look at the world and try to create art objects which can represent for example gravity, the wind, weight, relativity, history, light, temperature, biology, nuclear fusion, weapons, wars, peace, the behaviour of people, etc. All these interactions are innovative but their results have to be screened when one is also looking for things which can be useful for the industry. Glass Science in Archaeometry: Our main research line follows provenance studies of archaeological and museum glass and glazed ceramic objects. Several techniques are explored with emphasis on non-destructive instrumental analysis. The provenance of glazed materials is also being investigated, with a project starting on Portuguese Medieval glazed tiles and their provenance. The team involved in this project comprises researchers from different fields of knowledge, namely art history, conservation and restoration, archaeology, chemistry, geology and material sciences. Glass Science in Conservation: Presently corrosion studies of glass-based cultural heritage, namely ancient stained glass windows and ceramic glazes, are our main interest. Studying corrosion involves the characterization of the mechanisms of corrosion and also the materials tested, so there is always a close relationship between conservation and scientific analysis. Due to our close connection with the Department of Conservation and Restoration in FCT-UNL, small projects on glass science and conservation, sometimes involving Master students are always taking place. To achieve the presented objectives of VICARTE, research projects and partnerships with several research institutes, universities and museums were created. Regarding the educational perspective, VICARTE opens its laboratories and knowledge, to students from different fields. VICARTE hosts the Master in Glass Art and Science in one of the newest and most innovative concepts in glass education. The program is aimed at glass students who have the interest and ability to approach this material from a broader perspective of science and art. Finally VICARTE offers support technical both for artists and scientists from different fields and countries. A unidade de investigação “Vidro e Cerâmica para as Artes” procura uma abordagem multidisciplinar da ciência do vidro, onde o constante desenvolvimento de novos materiais que integrem o vidro na sua constituição encontra-se sempre aliado a uma noção de estética da cor e luz. Esta unidade de investigação considera esta interface arte/ciência de considerável relevância. A VICARTE pretende também contribuir para o conhecimento e preservação do património cultural de vidro e cerâmica, revelando o seu valor artístico e histórico e aperfeiçoar estratégias de conservação. No campo da educação o seu contributo revê-se na supervisão de mestrandos e doutorandos na investigação de áreas relacionadas com os materiais vidro e cerâmica. A VICARTE é actualmente responsável por um mestrado inovador em Arte e Ciência do Vidro. A unidade de investigação “Vidro e Cerâmica para as Artes” apresenta três linhas principais de investigação: Ciência do Vidro na Arte As propriedades luminescentes de alguns compostos de terras-raras e a sua aplicação na arte moderna foram dos primeiros temas de investigação a serem iniciados no VICARTE e encontram-se em contínuo desenvolvimento, com a sua extensão a esmaltes luminescentes para pintura. Será dado ênfase ao desenvolvimento de vidros de borossilicato luminescentes. Pretende obter-se uma cor vermelha nestes vidros com os elementos ouro ou cobre, produzindo os vidros a partir de um novo método recentemente desenvolvido por este grupo de investigação. Outros objectivos a salientar incluem a introdução de efeitos de cor por deposição de camada fina de óxidos metálicos. Este trabalho terá como destino final a sua aplicação em obras de arte produzidas pelas técnicas de sopro, kiln casting, pâte de verre e também no desenvolvimento de uma linguagem artística utilizando a gravação a laser de CO2 em combinação com esmaltes de vidro. Está em decurso um estudo para a produção de vidrados luminescentes e as suas possíveis aplicações na cerâmica artística, em particular os diferentes efeitos cromáticos que possam ser alcançados com as terras-raras. De particular interesse, destacamos também o desenvolvimento de vidrados macro-cristalinos produzidos a 1200ºC e dopados com terras-raras, e vidrados de basalto numa perspectiva artística. Além da interacção de artistas com cientistas para compreenderem as propriedades dos materiais que usam, descobrindo por vezes novos materiais, alterando as suas cores, discutindo os efeitos obtidos, etc.., alguns artistas observando o mundo que os rodeia, tentam criar objectos de arte que possam por exemplo representar a gravidade, o vento, o peso, a relatividade, a história, a luz, a temperatura, a biologia, a fusão nuclear, etc... Todas as interações entre arte e ciência descritas nesta secção são inovadoras mas os seus resultados têm que ser seleccionados se se tiverem como objectivos incluir também ideias que possam ter interesse industrial. Ciência do vidro na Arqueometria Outra linha de investigação de grande relevância para o VICARTE é a de estudos de proveniência de vidro ou cerâmica vidrada de cariz museológico ou arqueológico. Várias técnicas analíticas são exploradas para este fim, com ênfase em técnicas não-destrutivas. Um projecto iniciado recentemente pretende caracterizar azulejos medievais portugueses e desvendar a sua proveniência. A equipa envolvida apresenta investigadores de várias do conhecimento como história de arte, arqueologia, química, física, geologia e ciências dos materiais. Ciência do vidro na Conservação A nossa área de investigação mais relevante prende-se com estudos de corrosão do património cultural de vidro, nomeadamente o vitral e vidrados. O estudo da corrosão envolve a caracterização dos mecanismos de corrosão e dos próprios materiais de origem, existindo sempre uma estreita ligação entre a conservação e a análise científica. Devido à nossa ligação próxima com o Departamento de Conservação e Restauro da FCT-UNL, ocorrem sempre pequenos projectos ou mesmo teses de mestrado em ciência da conservação do vidro e da cerâmica. Para alcançar os objectivos da unidade, o VICARTE estabeleceu diversos projectos e parcerias com institutos de investigação, universidades e museus. Numa perspectiva pedagógica, o VICARTE apresenta regularmente os seus laboratórios e partilha o seu conhecimento com estudantes de várias áreas. O VICARTE é responsável pelo mestrado Arte e Ciência do Vidro, um dos programas mais inovadores na educação sobre vidro. O programa está direccionado para estudantes de vidro que apresentam interesse e desejem estudar o vidro numa perspectiva muito abrangente de ciência e arte. Por ultimo o VICARTE oferece apoio técnico a artistas e cientistas de várias áreas e países.

The Research Unit “Glass and Ceramics for the Arts” seeks a multidisciplinary approach in glass science, developing expertise in the synthesis of new glass and ceramics-based materials always exploring the aesthetics of colour and light. VICARTE joins specialists in art, science, design, technology, history, archaeology, and conservation of glass and ceramics. This pioneering encounter of know-how of areas so different as science and arts, are of interest to artists and scientists as well as industry, commerce and society. It is our aim to provide knowledge and innovative solutions, both for the artistic production and to the preservation of tangible cultural heritage. This will be attained through several research projects developed by two main research lines inside VICARTE. The Research Unit VICARTE – Vidro e Cerâmica para as Artes (Glass and Ceramic for the Arts) is a partnership between the Faculty of Sciences and Technology, NOVA University of Lisbon and the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lisbon. VICARTE's members come from both FCT/UNL and FBA/UL, and also from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Oporto and School of Arts and Design, Polytechnic Institute of Leiria. For 2014 VICARTE will operate with two research lines, Contemporary Creativity and Materials and Cultural Heritage, as a way to organize the research that have been highlighted since our origin. The first research line represents the most transdisciplinary aspect of our research unit, uniting scientists, artist and designers. It is focused on contemporary art and design exploring the use of glass and ceramics, the development of new materials that open new ways for artists, alongside their physical and chemical characterization. Also, paramount of VICARTE actions are the activities concerning the development of product design and cooperation with industry. Some examples of activities being developed are: the luminescence properties of some rare earth oxides and their application in contemporary art continue to be explored, with the extension to luminescent enamels for painting and luminescent glazes. Emphasis will also be placed on the development of luminescent borosilicate glasses. For the borosilicate glasses the red colour using either gold or copper will also be explored using a new process very recently developed by this research group. The second research line will dedicate to the study and conservation of our glass and ceramic cultural heritage, applying physical and chemical sciences in connection with archaeology and art history, with special emphasis on archaeometry and technical art history. The results of the developed cutting-edge research serves museums and others responsible for our cultural heritage, as well as general public by enlarging the knowledge in the history of production of glass and ceramics and minimising the degradation of our cultural heritage through the implementation of innovative conservation measures. Examples of our activities for 2014 are: the provenance of glazed materials, with a financed project on Portuguese Medieval glazed tiles and their provenance and the extension to Spanish glazed ceramics is also being sought as a way to compare both technologies. In terms of the connection with conservation science, corrosion studies of glass-based cultural heritage, namely ancient stained glass windows and ceramic glazes, are our main interest. The work performed in VICARTE can and will be of outmost importance for new product development, and ensure efficient and sustainable scale up to enable industrial manufacturing of the products. Finally the educational factor is always a key issue and VICARTE will continue to be responsible for the Master in Glass Art and Science, for the supervision of MSc and PhD thesis in Conservation involving glass and ceramic at FCT/UNL, and as a member of the PhD Course in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (CORES) sponsored by FCT/MCE and of the PhD Course in Fine-Arts (FBA/UL) in the speciality of Ceramics and (Product) Design. A unidade de investigação VICARTE (Vidro e Cerâmica para as Artes) é uma parceria da Faculdade de Ciência e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa e da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade de Lisboa. Inclui ainda membros da Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto e da Escola Superior de Arte e Design do Instituto Politécnico de Leiria. Em 2014 a VICARTE terá duas linhas de investigação, designadas Creatividade e Materiais Contemporâneos e o Património Cultural, de forma a organizar o trabalho desenvolvido que tem sido realçado desde a criação da unidade. A primeira linha representa o aspecto mais transdisciplinar da nossa unidade de investigação, unindo cientistas, artistas e designers. Foca-se na arte e design contemporâneo explorando o vidro e a cerâmica, no desenvolvimento de novos materiais que abrem novos caminhos para artistas e simultaneamente estudando as propriedades fisíco-químicas desses mesmos materiais, e finalmente, actividades que permitam o desenvolvimento de um produto de design e colaboração com a indústria. Alguns exemplos de actividades a serem desenvolvidas são as propriedades luminescentes de alguns óxidos de terras-raras e a sua aplicação em arte contemporânea, desenvolvendo-se também esmaltes luminescentes para pintura e vidrados luminescentes. Será também dado enfâse à produção de vidros de borosilicato luminescentes em que a cor vermelha será criada através dos elementos cobre ou ouro, de acordo com um novo processo que foi recentemente desenvolvido por esta unidade de investigação. O segundo grupo dedicar-se-á ao estudo e conservação do nosso património vítreo e cerâmico, aplicando as ciências fisíco-químicas em conjugação com a arqueologia e a história de arte, com especial enfâse na arqueometria e ‘technical art history’ (história das técnicas de produção artística). A investigação desenvolvida por este grupo serve museus e e agentes responsáveis pela nossa herança cultural, bem como público em geral, ampliando o conhecimento da história da produção de vidro e da cerâmica e permitindo a implementação de medidas de conservação inovadoras. Alguns exemplos das nossas actividades para 2014 são: estudos de proveniência de materiais vidrados, com um projecto financiado sobre azulejos medievais Portugueses e a sua proveniência, com extensão a cerâmicas vidradas espanholas. Este ultimo estudo é inevitável de forma a comparar tecnologias. Em termos de estudos em ciência de conservação, focamo-nos em estudos de corrosão de património cultural vítreo, nomeadente vitrais antigos e vidrados cerâmicos. O trabalho desenvolvido por ambos os grupos de investigação serão de vital importância para o desenvolvimento de novos produtos, e assegurar uma eficiente passagem para um nível de produção industrial. The research unit VICARTE is devoted to the promotion of transdisciplinary research applied to glass and ceramics, focusing on the intersections between art and science, and stimulating the sharing of knowledge, experiences and methodologies between these two areas. The research at VICARTE connects the present and the past, by developing new materials for glass and ceramics contemporary art, by studying the traditional and historical production practices and the exploration of different aesthetical concepts in art. We are committed to uphold and surpass VICARTE's reputation as a center of excellence that encourages cross-disciplinary research, creativity and innovation in glass and ceramic science applied to art, design and cultural heritage.
