    The EU Copernicus programme has established itself globally as the predominant spatial data provider, through the provision of massive streams of high resolution earth observation (EO) data. These data are used in environmental monitoring and climate change applications supporting European policy initiatives, such as the Green Deal and others. To date, there is no single European processing back-end that serves all datasets of interest, and Europe is falling behind international developments in big data analytics and computing. This situation limits the integration of these data in science and monitoring applications, particularly when expanding the applications to regional, continental, and global scales. The proposed C-SCALE (Copernicus - eoSC AnaLytics Engine) project aims to federate European EO infrastructure services, such as the Copernicus DIAS and others. The federation shall capitalise on the European Open Science Cloud’s (EOSC) capacity and capabilities to support Copernicus research and operations with large and easily accessible European computing environments. That would allow the rapid scaling and sharing of EO data among a large community of users by increasing the service offering of the EOSC Portal. By making such a scalable Big Copernicus Data Analytics federated services available through EOSC and its Portal and linking the problems and results with experience from other research disciplines, C-SCALE will help to support the EO sector in its development and furthermore will enable the integration of EO data into other existing and future domains within EOSC. By abstracting the set up of computing and storage resources from the end-users, C-SCALE will enable the deploying of custom workflows to quickly and easily generate meaningful results. The project will deliver a blueprint, setting up an interaction model between service providers to facilitate interoperability between commercial (e.g. DIAS-es) and public cloud infrastructures.

    Adaptation to climate change has become a central focus for researchers across various fields, including climate science, environmental science, urban planning, information science and social science, to support policymakers in making informed decisions to build a climate-prepared and resilient society. The major challenges in achieving this goal are (i) lack of seamless interaction between platforms, data spaces, and users, (ii) poor data interoperability as well as service interoperability, (iii) lack of infrastructural support for generating FAIR data, and (iv) legal barriers hindering access to data. CLIMATE-ADAPT4EOSC aims to overcome these challenges by providing an EOSC-centred collaborative research environment equipped with existing EOSC data and services and extended with new data and services, such as Interoperability, FAIRification, Research Results Publishing as Open Data, Data Adaptation, Data Format Compliancy, Mapping and Entity Matching, enabling interoperability and seamless interaction of data that allow the creation of extended services, e.g., Big Data Analytics for climate risk assessments. The project develops a climate change adaption ontology and an EOSC Climate-Adapt Knowledge Graph based on the ontology, supporting findability, accessibility, tracking and life cycle management of research outputs of various kinds, including data, scientific papers, methods, code, software packages and tools. CLIMATE-ADAPT4EOSC also develops three innovative services that provides support to EU Mission climate change adaptation and the European Green Deal. These services have been planned to be demonstrated in Five EU countries.

    EOSC-synergy extends the EOSC coordination to nine participating countries by harmonizing policies and federating relevant national research e-Infrastructures, scientific data and thematic services, bridging the gap between national initiatives and EOSC. The project introduces new capabilities by opening national thematic services to European access, thus expanding the EOSC offer in the Environment, Climate Change, Earth Observation and Life Sciences. This will be supported by an expansion of the capacity through the federation of compute, storage and data resources aligned with the EOSC and FAIR policies and practices. EOSC-synergy builds on the expertise of leading research organizations, infrastructure providers, NRENs and user communities from Spain, Portugal, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Netherlands, United Kingdom and France, all already committed to the EOSC vision and already involved in related activities at national and international level. Furthermore, we will expand EOSC’s global reach by integrating infrastructure and data providers beyond Europe, fostering international collaboration and open new resources to European researchers. The project will push the EOSC state-of-the-art in software and services life-cycle through a quality-driven approach to services integration that will promote the convergence and alignment towards EOSC standards and best practices. This will be complemented by the expansion of the EOSC training and education capabilities through the introduction of an on-line platform aimed at boosting the development of EOSC skills and competences. EOSC-synergy complements on-going activities in EOSC-hub and other related projects liaising national bodies and infrastructures with other upcoming governance, data and national coordination projects.

    iMagine provides a portfolio of free at the point of use image datasets, high-performance image analysis tools empowered with Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Best Practice documents for scientific image analysis. These services and materials enable better and more efficient processing and analysis of imaging data in marine and freshwater research, accelerating our scientific insights about processes and measures relevant for healthy oceans, seas, coastal and inland waters. By building on the computing platform of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) the project delivers a generic framework for AI model development, training, and deployment, which can be adopted by researchers for refining their AI-based applications for water pollution mitigation, biodiversity and ecosystem studies, climate change analysis and beach monitoring, but also for developing and optimising other AI-based applications in this field. The iMagine compute layer consists of providers from the pan-European EGI federation infrastructure, collectively offering over 132,000 GPU-hours, 6,000,000 CPU-hours and 1500 TB-month for image hosting and processing. The iMagine AI framework offers neural networks, parallel post-processing of very large data, and analysis of massive online data streams in distributed environments. 13 RIs will share over 9 million images and 8 AI-powered applications through the framework. Having representatives so many RIs and IT experts, developing a portfolio of eye-catching image processing services together will also give rise to Best Practices. The synergies between aquatic use cases will lead to common solutions in data management, quality control, performance, integration, provenance, and FAIRness, contributing to harmonisation across RIs and providing input for the iMagine Best Practice guidelines. The project results will be integrated into and will bring important contributions from RIs and e-infrastructures to EOSC and AI4EU.

    EGI-ACE empowers researchers from all disciplines to collaborate in data- and compute-intensive research across borders through free at point of use services. Building on the distributed computing integration in EOSC-hub, it delivers the EOSC Compute Platform and contributes to the EOSC Data Commons through a federation of Cloud compute and storage facilities, PaaS services and data spaces with analytics tools and federated access services. The Platform is built on the EGI Federation, the largest distributed computing infrastructure for research. The EGI Federation delivers over 1 Exabyte of research data and 1 Million CPU cores which supported the discovery of the Higgs Boson and the first observation of gravitational waves, while remaining open to new members. The Platform pools the capacity of some of Europe’s largest research data centres, leveraging ISO compliant federated service management. Over 30 months, it will provide more than 82 M CPU hours and 250 K GPU hours for data processing and analytics, and 45 PB/month to host and exploit research data. Its services address the needs of major research infrastructures and communities of practice engaged through the EOSC-hub project. The Platform advances beyond the state of the art through a data-centric approach, where data, tools and compute and storage facilities form a fully integrated environment accessible across borders thanks to Virtual Access. The Platform offers heterogeneous systems to meet different needs, including state of the art GPGPUs and accelerators supporting AI and ML, making the Platform an ideal innovation space for AI applications. The data spaces and analytics tools are delivered in collaboration with tens of research infrastructures and projects, to support use cases for Health, the Green Deal, and fundamental sciences. The consortium builds on the expertise and assets of the EGI federation members, key research communities and data providers, and collaborating initiatives.
