Common curricula for diversity: education in media and integration of vulnerable groups

Description

Context: The ‘ERMIScom’ Erasmus+ KA2 project proposal for Strategic Partnership for Higher Education aspires to develop a common curriculum among involved Higher Education Institutions (HEI) aiming to enhance the efficacy of media courses to counter fake news and hate speech spread online on social media in order to facilitate the social integration and inclusion of vulnerable social groups. The project will consist of a range of Work Packages and Intellectual Outputs. Background & Objectives: Nowadays social media constitute the most powerful tool in reporting current socio-political themes such as integration and inclusion policies worldwide. Through their social network, they have the potential to facilitate the integration and inclusion of vulnerable social groups in the social milieu of Europe. Unfortunately, social media instead of combating discrimination, is many times the origin of fake news and hate speech, which aggravates this situation. Education of journalists and social media professionals is the decisive factor of whether social media would become the driving force of integration or the agent giving floor to prejudices and stereotypes. Therefore, universities need to be equipped with a curriculum that can enable graduate students aiming to work in the field of journalism and social integration, as well as in PR departments or public institutions to promote European values of democracy, justice, human rights, dignity, European citizenship and strong institutions. Hence, the main objective of this project is to tackle skills gaps in the field of journalism and social media by developing a curriculum, which will provide students with the skills and competences to adequately research and report on social inclusion and integration related topics, while at the same time countering and combating stereotypes, prejudices, racism, xenophobia and anti-migrant sentiments and informing about possibilities in regards to social entrepreneurship, social economy and social innovation, which will enable the promotion of social integration values and support integration efforts. The long term aim of this project is to change the society’s mindset and to create an inclusive society, free from discrimination and radicalisation, which will be in the position to develop and grow in a sustainable and democratic living environment.Number & Profile of Participants (Partners): The applicant of this project proposal is the Media and Communication department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece, and include therefore include five (5) additional partners, among which 4 HEIs and 1 NGO from a representative range of EU and non-EU regions: Greece, Bulgaria, Belgium, Finland and Turkey.Description of Activities: The main output of this project is the development, piloting and implementation of a common curriculum, which will constitute a global Intellectual Output (IO). Throughout the whole project the partners will engage and consult with experts, convene with relevant stakeholders in roundtable discussions and provide training material online and for the students of the HEI and the members of their organisations and networks. The non-profit organisation partners will be asked to support the project with their experiences and contribute to the development of the IO especially in their field of expertise. The involved HEI will commit to implement the different modules of the common curriculum in a pilot phase. In addition, they will implement the IO (as compulsory courses and electives) upon the completion of the project and intend to continue their partnership by engaging in further joint activities. Most of this project’s Work Packages will include a Transnational Project Meeting in each of the partners’ countries, in addition to a continuous online cooperation, among the different cultures and mentalities represented by the selected countries and partners. Results & Impact: Despite the fundamental recognition of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), we witness a wide range of discrimination issues related to all of the above-mentioned categories (ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, race, religion, age, gender). The main outcome of this project will seek to address this issue of multifold discrimination, and will be the basic Intellectual Output in form of a common curriculum among the involved HEI’s departments of journalism & social media, and political and pedagogical sciences. This deliverable will also be used as training material by the partners and their related training organizations (e.g. KEDIVIM), as well as relevant education providers. It will be published on the project’s website and EPALE for a free download. The project aspires to have a transnational impact on all related professionals (journalists, media, social and pedagogical science professionals) in order to be better equipped to contribute to an inclusive society in Europe and beyond.
