Community development through English teaching

Description

CODET (Community development through English teaching) project aimed at creating a sustainable network of 4 European and 2 Asian and 2 Latin American EVS organisations having the capacity to host/send youth with fewer opportunities for EVS, improving the quality of EVS projects and capacity-building of staff of these organisations. It connected 8 EVS partners (KERIC, Slovakia, ICYE, Honduras, Centro Cultural Germina , Mexico, CSDS, Vietnam, KYSD, Cambodia, Vitatiim, Estonia, United Vision, the Czech Republic, VSI, Ireland) and 2 formal institutions (The University of Latvia and Kimmage DSC, Ireland) During the project, 12 European volunteers did their EVS in Honduras, Mexico, Cambodia and Vietnam for 3 months - teaching English using non-formal education methods to people in the local communities and doing a SCD (sustainable community development) project on topics such as entrepreneurship, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) or eco-tourism. Through EVS, they gained new personal and professional skills, increased their employability and became more open and tolerant to other cultures. At the same time, the activities of the volunteers supported a sustainable development of the local communities and empoweverment of its people. 8 EVS staff members or people connected with organisations from Honduras, Cambodia and Vietnam attended a mobility visit in Europe to gain new competencies, new intercultural and professional experience. The mutual exchange between European and OPC partners helped improve the quality of EVS projects and help to create a strong EVS network among the partners. 2 EVS organisations were new-comers to EVS, so a supervision visit was organised one month of the arrival of the volunteers to monitor and support the host organisations as well as the volunteers. The CODET ELT (English language teaching) module was created and tested as support for volunteers with no previous teaching experience to deliver English lessons using non-formal education methods to people in the local communities in Cambodia, Mexico, Honduras and Vietnam. The CODET SCD (Sustainable Community Development) toolbox was created and tested to provide simple activities for volunteers to help the sustainable development of local communities in Asia and Latin America. The following activities took place during the project: - a kick-off meeting(12 project coordinators and trainers) - 12 EVS projects - 8 mobilities of youth workers (8 EVS staff members or people connected with organisations from OPC countries) - 2 EVS supervisions in new partner organisations (2 experts for each visit) - evaluation meeting (13 project coordinators and trainers) The methods of work followed the principles of non-formal education.
